Peter Adeney, the Man behind Mr. Money Mustache, Earns $400,000 a Year on His Blog

Mr. Money Mustache

The New Yorker has a long article detailing the life story of Peter Adeney, the Man behind Mr. Money Mustache, who retired in 2005 at age thirty. He is, by his own reckoning, a wealthy man, without want, but he and his wife Simi, who have one child, spend an average of just twenty-four thousand dollars a year.

Adeney presents thrift as liberation rather than as deprivation. Living a certain way is his life’s work. His goals, he says, are as follow:

  1. To make you rich so you can retire early
  2. To make you happy so you can properly enjoy your early retirement
  3. To save the whole Human Race from destroying itself through overconsumption of its habitat.

The blog Mr. Money Mustache, which he started five years ago, is currently one of the top blogs on the list of Top Personal Finance Blogs. His blog is now earning around $400,000 a year and he plans to donate the money away some day.

So how does Adeney become so successful?

It’s his drive to preach “financial freedom through badassity” on his website and internet forum. Adeney writes about personal finance and frugal living while creating a massive following. He started his blog in 2011 during his early retirement after a career in the tech industry. With a huge following of loyal fans and supporters, Mr. Money Mustache blog has grown in epic proportions. Even though he lives a comfortable life in retirement he still earns $400,000 from his blog with approximately 3.25 million unique visitors a month.

What is the net worth of Mr. Money Mustache?

Mr. Money Mustache retired at age thirty so he’s already financial independent back in 2005 with over $1 million. After retirement, Mr. Adeney earned even more money with his blog and eventually he is now earning around $400,000 a year. Mr. Adeney doesn’t give out the exact number for his net worth, but the extrapolated net worth of Mr. Money Mustache is between $3 million to $5 million. Keep in mind he’s still relatively young so his net worth is still growing at an exponential rate.
